The major was established in 1996 and was awarded the national first-class major in 2002. The disciplinary rating was A in the same year.

Based on the university's transportation characteristics and multidisciplinary intersection advantages, the major is oriented to China's transportation environment and the strategic needs of Beautiful China under ecological civilization. It serves the new scene creation in the new era of integration with transportation and traveling experience. The major is committed to cultivating students with high-quality environmental design talents and the ability to integrate art cultivation and engineering practice, design thinking and heritage innovation, system science, and communication.

The major takes transportation-oriented environmental design and western China's local characteristics, urban-rural environmental design, cultural and tourism environmental design, and habitat environmental design as its characteristics. It integrates architecture-landscape planning-art-design methods and knowledge coupling to help cultivate complex, high-quality professional talents. The major is committed to exploring digital empowerment teaching innovation and platforms. Through the construction of a practice platform, it realizes technology-enabled digital environmental design talent cultivation.
